FoKAL Aceh Distributes Millions of Books to Students in Lhokseumawe City Encourages Interest in Reading


BONSERNEWS.com – Acting Mayor of Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Dr Drs Imran, MSi, MA, appreciated the distribution of a million reading books for Aceh by the Lhokseumawe Alumni Communication Forum Foundation (FoKAL).

According to Imran, the results of UNESCO statistical data, out of a total of 61 countries, Indonesia is ranked 60th in terms of reading interest and low literacy levels, including in Aceh Province.

“Currently interest in reading is very low, including the distribution of books and book collections in the library which is also not good,” said Dr Imran, after the book handover ceremony at SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe, Thursday, June 15, 2023.

Furthermore, Dr. Imran highly appreciates the activities carried out by FoKAL which care for the younger generation, which is a commitment in addressing the low interest in reading and poor literacy in Indonesia.

“We still have big problems related to books and literacy in Indonesia, especially in Aceh including Lhokseumawe, and this is an endeavor and encouragement for schools and students to continue to increase interest in reading,” said Dr Imran.

Meanwhile, FoKAL Foundation Chair Said Rulam said the One Million Books for Aceh activity was a book donation program for school libraries throughout Aceh Province that had been implemented since 2005.

“This activity started as a humanitarian movement for schools affected by the tsunami in Aceh in 2004. This was done to increase interest in reading in Indonesia, including in Aceh,” he said.

Said said the FoKal Foundation will continue to strive to increase literacy in Indonesia in order to educate the nation’s children. Doing it as a tireless effort to educate the life of the people of Aceh.

“This book assistance comes from assistance from various parties in Jakarta, be it from companies, institutions, or individuals. We hope that this book donation can be used to educate students in Aceh,” he also said.

It is known that this 11th stage is part of an ongoing program of a million books carried out by the FoKAL Foundation for schools in Three City Districts in Aceh, namely 1,500 reading books distributed to SMKN 1 Lhokseumawe Schools, as well as schools in Bener Meriah and Aceh Tamiang Regencies.
