BONSERNEWS.com.- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 struck Banda Aceh City, Aceh Province, Sunday (9/7/2023) around 21.09 WIB.
The earthquake this time did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, but it had caused residents to panic.
Based on a rapid report from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was 64 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh at a depth of 34 kilometers.

Head of the Banda Aceh City Disaster Mitigation Agency, Rizal Abdillah, said that the results of monitoring by the earthquake team showed no damage or casualties.
“I’m still waiting for further information from the field, so far the conditions are safe,” said Rizal.
Rizal added, learning from previous experiences, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
“Small-scale earthquakes are common in Banda Aceh, residents don’t panic, but remain alert,” said Rizal.
Banda Aceh was rocked by a devastating earthquake followed by a tsunami on December 26, 2004. Hundreds of thousands of people died and thousands of buildings were destroyed.
After the disaster, people’s preparedness was strengthened.
