BMKG Informs About What Caused the Earthquake in Banda Aceh, See the Full Review


BONSERNEWS.com – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 shook the southwest region of Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, on Sunday (9/7) evening, and there was no potential for a tsunami.

“The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami,” said Head of the Aceh Geophysics Station Besasr Andi Azhar Rusdin.

He explained that the tectonic earthquake occurred at around 21.09 WIB in the Indian Ocean region of the West Coast of Sumatra, Aceh Besar.

The results of the BMKG analysis show that the earthquake has parameters with a magnitude of M5.3.

Di said, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 5.47 North Latitude and 94.62 m East Longitude, or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 78 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, at a depth of 66 kilometers.

“Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium-sized earthquake due to plate subduction activity,” he said.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism, he continued, show that earthquakes have an upward movement mechanism.

This earthquake was felt in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Besar.

“Until now there has been no report of the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake,” he said.

He added, as of 21:30 WIB, the BMKG monitoring results had not shown any activity of aftershocks.

Nevertheless, he also appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be accounted for.

“Then to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake,” he said.
